VOCATIONAL TRAINING

context

In the context of a patriarchal society, where men are expected to bring money home, as well as in a society where employment opportunities are almost non-existent (only 19% of the Afghan labour force was composed of women in 2014 (compared to 51% in France and over 24% in Pakistan), an income-generating activity for women makes sense. The aim is to strengthen the empowerment of vulnerable women. Through technical training sessions in sewing, these women will be led to have their own work and gain in independence and development. This component of the project will have a real positive impact on the beneficiaries who will regain their self-esteem, as well as a better place in the household thanks to their financial contribution to the family life.

Projects

Literacy courses for health education beneficiaries

In Afghanistan, 8 out of 10 women are illiterate. Yet literacy is the essential first step towards empowering women. Literate, they can develop their talents and skills, build or strengthen their social and economic independence.

To achieve this objective, beneficiaries of basic health training take a 2-hour literacy course twice a week.

Introduction to micro-management and training in income-generating activities

The training takes place in a dedicated centre outside the Health and Education Center for Women, under the supervision of the trainers and seamstresses. This training is composed of a technical apprenticeship in sewing and a training in micro-management (literacy, account management, etc.).

At the end of the training cycle, the accompanied beneficiaries who have matured a real professional project receive a sewing machine and are accompanied in the setting up of their project. After three years of implementation of the project, we would like to achieve a more autonomous economic model in the form of a clothing cooperative bringing up together the various micro entreprises developed by these women. In order to develop the entrepreneurial spirit of the beneficiaries and commercial opportunities, we will organize training seminars in design, styling, and marketing, and encourage the development of the cooperative’s structure.
